Severe Winter Storm Expected to Impact 19 States This Weekend: What to Know
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a dire warning about the possibility of yet another severe winter storm, which could impact up to 19 states. This is everything we know so far.
Expect 'Another Significant Winter Storm' This Weekend
“Potential is increasing for another significant winter storm to impact the eastern United States this coming weekend,” the NWS said in a post to X on Monday, Jan. 26. The brief (and somewhat open-ended statement) accompanied a photo from the Weather Prediction Center, which outlined the possibility of “moderate impacts” due to severe weather later this week. The prediction reports “chance of at least moderate winter storm impacts” from the evening of Friday, Jan. 30, through Monday, Feb. 2. The warning added that the storm could bring “hazardous driving” conditions and cause “some disruption” across the East Coast. The forecast comes as the East is weathering a severe winter storm that immobilized much of the region, leaving 20 dead and many without power.
This Is Everything We Know So Far
According to the NWS:
- “Continued very cold temperatures will blanket the eastern half of the U.S. into next week.”
- “A high-altitude disturbance will dive out of Canada [on] Thursday and deepen across the East by Saturday, leading to a strong surface low-pressure system.”
- “This surface low combined with the very cold air mass will result in widespread heavy precipitation.”
But Some Key Details Are Still Undetermined
However, the NWS specifies that some key details of the storm are still undetermined. This includes “the placement, strength, and timing of the disturbance from Canada” as well as ongoing “impacts to travel and infrastructure due to snow and wind.” Likewise unclear at this time is “the timing, track, and strength of the surface low which will determine the precipitation type (rain/snow/mix) and how much precipitation occurs offshore.”
“It is too early to know the details, but please keep updated with the latest forecasts this week,” the NWS added. You can track up-to-the-minute forecasts at www.weather.gov.
For many, news of another extreme weather event was too much to handle as those in the East continue to endure the present “deep freeze” conditions. “Bro, I just finished shoveling. You gotta chill,” wrote one X user. “Looks like it’s time to stock up on snacks and firewood,” added another.
