Iran Braces for Possible US, Israeli Strike After US Carrier Deployment, Report
Iran is preparing for a possible new military strike by the United States and Israel following the deployment of a US aircraft carrier, analysts cited by British media say.
Britain’s Guardian newspaper reported on Monday that observers believe Iran is bracing for fresh attacks after the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group was deployed to waters near the region.
The report said Washington, potentially coordinating with Israeli fighter jets, appears to have sufficient firepower for strikes aimed at Iran’s political leadership rather than its already weakened nuclear programme.
Iran has faced months of domestic unrest, with authorities accused of violently suppressing protests linked to economic decline, political repression and falling living standards.
Western governments have repeatedly warned Tehran that continued internal repression and regional escalation could provoke stronger military and diplomatic responses.
The Guardian said any potential attack would seek to reignite mass protests by targeting Iran’s leadership rather than focusing on nuclear facilities previously damaged by covert and overt actions.
The Economist separately reported that Gulf officials see a rising likelihood of a large-scale US strike, with Iran’s political leadership potentially becoming the primary target.
According to the report, alongside the carrier deployment, F-15E fighter squadrons, Patriot and THAAD air defence systems, as well as refuelling aircraft, have been moved into the region.
The Economist outlined three possible scenarios, ranging from limited symbolic strikes to a broad assault on Iran’s ruling system, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
