“It’s a tough day to feel like celebrating a birthday. I’m holding space for what’s happening in our world and holding close what I’m grateful for. Like my wife. And cookies,” she said in the caption.
Ellen is wearing a green sweater in the snapshot and hugging Portia from behind as the Arrested Development alum nibbles on a cookie.
Her birthday post came two days after Alex Pretti was shot and killed by United States Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis, Minn. She shared a touching clip dedicated to the ICU nurse on her Instagram the day before her birthday, captioning it, “This is Alex Pretti.”
Ellen also previously spoke out about the killing of Renée Good, who was fatally shot by an ICE agent on January 7, also in Minneapolis. She’s shared other videos showing support to the city, which she says was where she filmed her last stand-up special and felt very welcomed by the community.
Amid the fallout from Pretti‘s death, some reports are saying Border Patrol commander Greg Bovino and some of his agents are expected to leave the Minnesota capital imminently.
