Why Volunteering with SABR TOPSoccer Is One of the Most Rewarding Things You Can Do

At SABR TOPSoccer, volunteers aren’t just helping hands — they are the heart and soul of a truly special community program. For 25 seasons, SABR TOPSoccer has brought the joy of soccer to young athletes with special needs, creating meaningful connections that change lives on and off the field.

SABR TOPSoccer is one of the largest and most recognized TOPSoccer programs in Florida, and it is nationally recognized by US Youth Soccer. Each season, nearly 200 players take the field, supported one-to-one by dedicated teenage Buddies who guide, encourage, and celebrate every step of the journey.

Over the years, several SABR Buddies have been honored as Florida Buddy of the Year by the Florida Youth Soccer Association, with one recognized as National Buddy of the Year by US Youth Soccer. In addition, one of SABR’s volunteer coaches — who has been part of TOPSoccer since its very first season — was named National TOPSoccer Volunteer of the Year by US Youth Soccer.

Make a Real Difference — On and Off the Field

TOPSoccer (The Opportunity to Play Soccer) is a recreational soccer program designed for athletes with physical, developmental, or intellectual challenges. It gives players the chance to experience the thrill of the game, build friendships, and grow in confidence — all in a safe, supportive environment.

Each player is paired with a volunteer, and that’s where the magic happens.

Meet the Team Behind SABR TOPSoccer

Volunteering with SABR TOPSoccer means becoming part of a well-established program led by experienced, committed leaders. Adult volunteers will meet and work alongside the SABR TOPSoccer Director, the TOPSoccer Administrator, and the broader Administrator team who support the program each season.

Administrative volunteers who step in during the current season will gain firsthand exposure to how TOPSoccer operates on and off the field — an important foundation for contributing meaningfully when planning for the next season begins. Prospective coaches are encouraged to observe a Saturday afternoon game day to see the program in action, meet the leadership team, and better understand the role before committing.

Volunteering with SABR TOPSoccer isn’t just service — not in the least bit. It’s an experience filled with connection, purpose, and joy, all while being a ton of fun! Sara McDonough has been coaching TOPSoccer for seven years and describes it as an amazing program. “The smiles we get each week from the players are the reason we come back week after week,” she says. She adds, “Every one of our friends we brought in to volunteer keeps coming back.”

It’s important to note that Sara does not currently have a child or relative in TOPSoccer. She continues to volunteer and coach simply because she believes in the program and the community it creates.

For teens and adults alike, TOPSoccer offers a welcoming environment that feels warm, fun, and deeply rewarding. Volunteers often remark that it’s nothing like typical volunteer responsibilities — it never feels like a chore.

TOPSoccer builds lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories. It’s common for volunteers to form lasting connections with fellow volunteers, coaches, and especially the players themselves. Many return season after season simply because of the joy they experience on the field.

Experience Joy Every Game Day

Game days at TOPSoccer are filled with energy, laughter, and moments that stay with you long after the final whistle.

It’s not just about scoring goals or making saves. It’s about celebrating small victories — a new skill mastered, a brave attempt, or a hard-earned smile.

Nothing is more rewarding than watching TOPSoccer players grow in confidence each week as they learn, try new things, and enjoy being part of a team.

Feeling the gratitude of players and families who truly feel your presence makes the entire experience even more meaningful.

In every way, volunteering here is more than helping with soccer — it’s about building community. It’s about showing up, making connections, and lifting others.

No Experience? No Problem

You don’t need to be a soccer expert to be a great volunteer. SABR welcomes anyone with kindness, enthusiasm, and a willingness to support others. From your first orientation to cheering on players at your first game, you’ll find a supportive and encouraging team beside you every step of the way.
