Ted Cruz Criticizes Trump & J.D. Vance in Leaked Private Recordings, Report
Texas Senator Ted Cruz has allegedly been recorded criticizing President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in newly surfaced private recordings.
The recordings were reportedly obtained by Axios and allegedly stem from two meetings with Republican donors recorded last year. They include nearly 10 minutes of the Republican senator criticizing Trump’s tariff policies and raising concerns about the administration’s foreign policy direction.

Among other remarks, Cruz reportedly referred to Vance as a Tucker Carlson “protégé” and criticized Trump’s controversial tariff agenda.
On Carlson, Cruz allegedly said, “Tucker created JD. JD is Tucker’s protégé, and they are one and the same,” with the senator primarily taking issue with Vance’s anti-interventionist foreign policy stance.
Another recording features Cruz mocking the “Liberation Day” event from April 2025, when Trump shared his tariff plans affecting almost all U.S. imports.
“I’ve told my team if anyone uses those words, they will be terminated on the spot. That is not language we use,” Cruz said in reference to the “Liberation Day” label, via People.
In the recordings, Cruz could also be heard describing tense calls with Trump, alleging that the president was unhappy and could be heard “yelling” and “cursing” as the senator attempted to warn him about the economic fallout of the tariff plan.
Cruz said he cautioned that damaging the economy could turn the midterm elections into a “bloodbath.”
“[I said] you’re going to lose the House, you’re going to lose the Senate, you’re going to spend the next two years being impeached every single week,” Cruz recalled.
According to the recordings, Trump allegedly responded, “F–k you.”
Despite the remarks, a spokesperson for Cruz pushed back on the narrative, telling People that the senator is “the president’s greatest ally in the Senate and battles every day in the trenches to advance his agenda.”
“Those battles include fights over staffers who try to enter the administration despite disagreeing with the president and seeking to undermine his foreign policy,” read the statement. “Sen. Cruz is proud of those fights, his accomplishments, and his close relationship with the president. These attempts at sowing division are pathetic and getting boring.”
