EU backing renewable energy projects in Afghanistan
On World Clean Energy Day, the European Union reaffirmed support for renewable energy projects in Afghanistan, promoting sustainable solar power solutions amid climate challenges.
The European Union delegation in Afghanistan said on Monday, January 26, that it supports renewable energy projects to help the country address growing climate challenges.
EU representatives highlighted that in a time of climate crisis, multiple initiatives have strengthened sustainable solutions by harnessing solar energy across Afghanistan.
Afghanistan ranks among the ten most climate-vulnerable countries, facing extreme weather events and persistent environmental pressures that threaten livelihoods and infrastructure.
The country has endured four consecutive years of drought, exacerbating energy and water shortages while affecting agricultural production and food security in rural areas.
Last year, various United Nations agencies implemented solar-powered projects to generate electricity and provide clean water in several Afghanistan provinces, improving access for communities.
Solar energy has increasingly become a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative, offering both electricity and water solutions while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Experts say that expanding renewable energy infrastructure can enhance Afghanistan’s resilience to climate shocks, stimulate local economies, and improve public services in vulnerable regions.
The EU emphasized its continued commitment to support sustainable energy initiatives, highlighting renewable power as a vital component of Afghanistan’s long-term development strategy.
