Senior MCP Members Defect to UTM in Rumphi to Back Mtumbuka Parliamentary Bid
Senior members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in Rumphi have defected to the United Transformation Movement (UTM) to support Dr. Matthews Mtumbuka’s parliamentary candidacy in the March 17 by-election in Rumphi Central Constituency.
The former MCP officials were formally incorporated into the UTM District Executive Committee, a development seen as strengthening the party’s campaign structures ahead of the polls.
Speaking during the ceremony, ex-MCP official Evelyn Dzimbiri said their decision to leave MCP was motivated by confidence in Dr. Mtumbuka’s leadership and his vision for development in Rumphi Central.
She predicted a landslide victory for Mtumbuka, citing growing support from former MCP members who have joined UTM in recent months.
Dr. Mtumbuka welcomed the defectors and thanked them for reinforcing UTM’s presence in the district.
He urged them to work hard in their new roles to ensure success in the by-election.
More MCP members continue to defect to UTM in Rumphi Central, rallying behind Mtumbuka’s parliamentary bid.
Political observers say the shift of senior MCP members to UTM could significantly influence the outcome of the March 17 vote.
