"No question": Michael Owen says 26yo Man Utd star is poised to start vs Fulham after Arsenal display
Premier League legend Michael Owen has said that Manchester United star Matheus Cunha is poised to start after the 3-2 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
The Red Devils have picked up back-to-back league victories since Michael Carrick was placed on interim charge.
United started in a slow fashion against the Gunners yesterday, but picked up momentum after going 1-0 behind.
A Martin Zubimendi error contributed to Bryan Mbeumo equalising before the half-time interval.
Patrick Dorgu’s wonder strike made it 2-1 in United’s favour early into the second half, but Mikel Merino managed to bring Arsenal level.
United had the last laugh with Cunha scoring a late winner to register the club’s first league win at the Emirates since December 2017.
Speaking after the game, Owen hailed Cunha’s cameo and believed the Brazilian would score as soon as he got hold of the ball outside the Gunners’ box.
He told Premier League productions (via Metro): “As soon as he picked the ball up, first touch, I said goal.
“He’s just got amazing power, accuracy, he knows how to set himself. He’s calm in that situation and he uses a man to bend the ball around.
“This is one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League in this type of area and I just thought, This is a huge chance and bang, back of the net before you could blink.”
The former United and Liverpool striker added that he was surprised that Cunha did not start the game, but he will against Fulham as Dorgu may have picked up a hamstring injury.
Owen added: “I was surprised that he didn’t start, but saying that, after the performance against Manchester City, I can understand why Michael Carrick didn’t change things.
“But he will start next game, no question about it, because it looks like Dorgu might have had a hamstring injury.”
Cunha joined the Red Devils in a deal worth £62.5 million from Wolverhampton Wanderers last summer.
He had a mixed start to his United career. The 26-year-old attacker was getting into goal-scoring positions, but could not capitalise on his chances. That has changed over recent weeks.
Cunha has bagged four goals and two assists in his last nine appearances. He has started to find his feet and seems to be enjoying the current 4-2-3-1 system under interim manager Michael Carrick.
As Owen said, he could make the XI when the Red Devils host Fulham on Sunday. Dorgu seemed to pull up with a possible hamstring injury and faces a race to be fit to tackle Marco Silva’s side.
Regardless, we would personally prefer Cunha to start against the Cottagers. He should be rewarded with more minutes on the back of two fantastic cameo appearances for the Red Devils.
