Tottenham receive crushing transfer blow as selling club walk away from bargain talks
Just days ago, it was revealed that Tottenham were pushing to sign Andy Robertson before the transfer window closes. Now, the move could be off.
It was a surprise when Spurs were said to be looking to snap up Robertson now rather than waiting until the summer when he becomes a free agent.
Apparently, Tottenham were willing to pay around £3m for Robertson to get the move done early. Early signs suggested the player was willing to make the switch, too.
It would have been a shrewd move for Thomas Frank, who was clearly invested in bringing the experienced Scotsman in. But, it now looks like the Lilywhites will have to look elsewhere.
Andy Robertson may be about to snub Tottenham
According to a fresh report from The Times, it is thought Liverpool have now decided to block the move for Andy Robertson and have made it clear to Spurs that it will not be happening this month.
While initial talks had been positive between the two clubs and Liverpool were well aware that they will be losing the player for nothing in the summer, they have also taken into consideration just how valuable he has been to the squad over the last eight years.
Given Liverpool do not have sufficient cover in the left-back area, they have now determined that letting Robertson go would not make sense for them. The Reds have now backed away from any negotiations, it is thought.
Meanwhile, Robertson himself was not necessarily pushing for the move. He was believed to be happy enough to go, and Robertson even appeared to wave goodbye to Liverpool fans this weekend, but he is known to be equally happy to stay put.
What do Spurs do if Robertson stays at Liverpool?
Is this disappointing for Tottenham? Absolutely. Is it the end of the world? No, it’s not. For a start, Spurs have just signed another left-back in Souza. Sure, he’s young and untested, but he’s got plenty of potential.
Having Robertson’s experience and leadership would have been a good addition to the Tottenham squad, but they will now just have to look elsewhere for that.
In fairness, fans were not sold on the idea of Robertson anyway, so there will be very few who are genuinely gutted that the deal is off.
For Tottenham, signing a new winger has to be the main priority now. With less than a week to go in the transfer window, let’s just hope this pursuit of Robertson has not cost the Lilywhites too much time and attention.
