Over 10,000 U.S. Flights Already Canceled Sunday Due to Winter Storm
A significant portion of the United States is experiencing the effects of a severe winter storm on Sunday, with snow, sleet and ice causing power outages and wreaking havoc on travel around the country.
It's just before noon ET, and already, over 10,000 fights have been canceled at American airports due to the inclement weather, according to Flight Aware.
Three airlines have canceled over 1,000 flights each
As of the time of this writing, there have been 10,399 flights within, into, or out of the United States canceled on Sunday, with over 11,000 total cancelations.
American Airlines leads the way with 1,471 cancelations, followed by Delta Air Lines with 1,332 and Southwest with 1,279.
United is right behind them and closing in on four figures worth of cancelations; the carrier has currently called off 927 flights. Republic has logged 897 cancelations.
Which airports have been hardest hit?
Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina has the most total cancelations (1,091), followed by Hartsfield-Jackson International in Atlanta with 1,072.
North Texas has been hit by an ice storm, which leaves Dallas Fort Worth International Airport with over 900 cancelations, per Flight Aware, and a ground stop as of this morning.
In the Northeast, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. have all seen widespread cancelations and delays at their respective air hubs, as has New York City (LaGuardia and JFK) and Newark, New Jersey.
Monday travel already affected
With the storm expected to rage through today and into tonight in many areas, flying on Monday could also prove hazardous.
So far, there have been over 2,100 total cancelations, including 1,972 within, into, or out of the United States tomorrow. Republic (337 cancelations), JetBlue (332) and Southwest (215) have been the most impacted airlines.
Boston Logan International Airport, along with JFK, LaGuardia and Newark, lead the list of nixed flights for air hubs.
