Thomas Frank reveals two things Tottenham need to get back to winning ways
Tottenham Hotspur have once again dropped points to a team in the bottom three, and Thomas Frank still believes his side are close to reaching the next level.
The Champions League provided Tottenham Hotspur with a special victory on Tuesday night, but Saturday was underwhelming in comparison.
Spurs took the lead at Turf Moor through Micky van de Ven and were on top throughout most of the first half.
However, Burnley drew level on the stroke of half-time before taking the lead later on, meaning Tottenham required a 90th-minute goal to get anything from the game.
Thomas Frank believes Tottenham should have defeated Burnley
The Spurs supporters who made the long trip up north did not hide how they felt about their team’s performance. Despite this, Thomas Frank has been far more positive in his post-match assessment of the afternoon’s proceedings.
According to the Dane, Tottenham had good moments at both the beginning and conclusion of the game, but they need to do better across the whole 90 minutes.
He told BBC Sport: “It’s very important to focus on the start of the game. And the first half is really good. We came here, on top of it, creating chances, 1-0 and could have scored a second one.
“Then it’s important to focus on how strong we ended with that character to keep fighting. But we have to improve the bit in the middle.”
According to Frank, it is just a simple case of not conceding two big chances at one end, while also scoring more at the other – a sentiment some fans have long grown tired of.
Speaking on pressure and how Spurs can start getting results, Frank added: “I know but you can’t say we didn’t do everything to win. We just need to keep improving. The only way it can be is calm heads, carry on and keep doing what we think is the right thing.
“You see the game today. We do more than enough to win the game, we just need to defend better in two situations. And, of course, score another goal that could make the difference at 1-0.”
Frank continues to see the positive in dismal results
No matter what positive spin Frank attempts to put on Tottenham’s latest Premier League fixture, a 2-2 draw against Burnley is unacceptable.
Spurs lacked innovation in attack and required their centre-backs to be the ones finding the net, in what has become a familiar scenario.
Chances of playing European football in any form next season are drifting away and this will only continue if Frank cannot get his team winning.
Thomas Frank added (Football London): “I think there’s definitely something, and I’ve said it before, the ability to handle setbacks in games. It’s something we’re working very hard on, which I actually think we’ve done better and better. This I would say at the 1-1, the first part of the second half is an area we need to do better and the right things.
“I think after the 2-1 goal they found extra willpower and determination, which is hugely beneficial. I think also it’s sometimes margins. If we score 2-1 with Dom’s goal then I’m sure we’d be in a fine place.”
On Dubravka’s performance, Frank said: “Dubravka was man of the match, he was that for a reason. That means we did a lot of things right offensively. I think we came here, took some of the confidence from the game against Dortmund into the game.
“I think first half we were good. I think actually we were very good, dominating the game, on top of the game, scoring 1-0 goal, creating a lot of chances, opportunities, could have done the 2-0, more or less if not out of sight, then definitely in a very good way to try to win a football match.
“And we concede a chance… we give nothing away first half, except a goal at the end of the first half, that we can never, ever, ever concede that goal. Because it just changed a little bit the momentum going into half-time.”
