Sports Briefs: Shapiro’s 42 paces San Rafael to first MCAL win
Luke Shapiro poured in 42 points to lead San Rafael High to its first MCAL boys basketball win of the season, an 84-54 win over Novato on Friday night.
Shapiro had 28 points in the first half to boost the Bulldogs (12-10, 1-3) to a 40-24 halftime lead. Shapiro rained in five 3-pointers, and added six steals to his night. Jax Aguillon, Rocco Brovelli, Wyatt Tornello and Mason Stein split 25 points for San Rafael. Robert DeLeon and Chris Toussaint split 30 for the Hornets (0-21, 0-4).
- Meezy Butler lit up the scoreboard with 30 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists as Archie Williams High beat Terra Linda, 76-57, on Friday night. Brian Wright added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Peregrine Falcons (14-6, 3-1), while Grady Stewart had 11 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals, and senior Gabe Cerio chipped in seven points.
- NJ Gray scored a game-high 22 points as the Branson School rolled to its fourth consecutive win, an 81-41 rout of Tam High on Friday night. Tyler Wells scored 20 points for the Bulls (10-11, 4-1), who also got 16 points from Gabe Halbrecht. Tam was led by Felix Jacobs with 12 points, while Porthos Oliveira and Arman Salkhi added eight points each for the Red-tailed Hawks (12-10, 3-2).
- San Marin (12-10, 1-3) posted a 61-54 victory over Justin-Siena in non-league action on Friday. The Mustangs are scheduled to play Redwood on Tuesday.
Girls basketball
Nabilah Nijem scored a team-high 19 points to lead Novato High to a 50-29 victory over San Rafael on Friday. Savannah Sparks added 17 points for the Hornets (8-12, 3-1), who are riding a three-game win streak.
- Archie Williams High got rolling early in Friday’s 54-26 victory over Terra Linda. Reese Patton led the Peregrine Falcons (10-8, 2-2) with 16 points, while Victoria Anderson-Lynch had 12 points. Lila Peterson and Valentina Diaz added seven points each.
- Branson beat Tam, 46-29, on Friday night.
Men’s basketball
San Domenico grad Gavin Early came off the bench to score 17 for Santa Rosa JC in Friday’s 80-66 victory over Delta. The Bear Cubs (17-4, 7-2) are scheduled to face Diablo Valley on Jan. 30.
- San Rafael High grad Gio Brovelli scored 20 points for De Anza College in Wednesday’s 80-75 win over San Mateo. De Anza (12-9, 3-3) is scheduled to face Skyline on Wednesday.
Boys soccer
San Rafael (8-2-6, 3-0-1) secured a 3-0 home win against Marin Catholic (4-6-2, 0-4-1) on Friday night. Elvin Calderon and Frisly Reyes scored first-half goals, assisted by Joey Navarette and Cal Stewart, respectively. Stewart added the third goal in the 56th minute, assisted by Dylan Maldonado.
