Six Afghan suspects killed in Karachi police shootout
Pakistani police say six Afghan armed robbery suspects wanted in dozens of cases were killed during a gunfight with officers in Karachi on Friday.
Police said the suspects were shot dead during an intelligence-based operation targeting an armed gang involved in organised street crime and house robberies in the city.
According to police, the men had been wanted for several months and were linked to the killing of three brothers during a home robbery earlier this year.
Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, has long struggled with organised crime, including armed robberies carried out by gangs operating across multiple neighbourhoods.
Law enforcement agencies say recent operations have focused on dismantling criminal networks blamed for a surge in violent crimes, particularly against women and families inside their homes.
Police said an exchange of fire erupted when officers attempted to arrest the suspects, leaving all six dead at the scene and injuring two policemen.
Authorities said the gang was involved in more than 50 house robberies across Karachi, with several cases involving violence and intimidation of residents.
Police confirmed the recovery of six pistols, a rifle and two motorcycles believed to have been used in criminal activities, adding that multiple cases had already been registered against the suspects.
Investigations are continuing to determine whether the group had links to other criminal networks operating in the city, police said.
