Sports briefs: Terra Linda rallies for road win against Redwood
The Terra Linda High boys soccer team rallied in the second half for a 2-1 road victory against Redwood on Friday.
Duke Elkington scored the first goal following an assist by Alex Deleon. Luis Cortez provided the winner for TL (6-3-3, 3-0-2 MCAL) on a direct free kick.
TL sits atop the table with 11 points but the chasing pack of Tam (10), San Rafael (10), and Archie Williams (8) all have a game in hand. Redwood (4-4-4, 2-2-1) sits comfortably in fifth through five games.
- Luke Nurney scored a goal and added two assists to pace Tam in a 6-0 win against Novato on Friday. Marco Caruso added a pair of goals for the Red-tailed Hawks (9-3-3, 3-0-1). West Freau, Milan Schaefer, and Cole Soto all found the back of the net against the Hornets (0-5-1, 0-3-0). Geison Giron also had an assist for Tam. Brian Martinez made several saves in goal for Novato.
- Friday’s late games saw Branson post a crucial 2-0 win at San Marin. The victory vaulted the Bulls (4-4-2, 1-3-0) up from last place into sixth — one point clear of the Mustangs (0-8-5, 0-2-2) in seventh. Mateo Trammel scored in the fifth minute, assisted by Cooper Little and Drew Holden. Larry Calle-LaBou scored in the 25th minute, assisted by Will Swift.
- San Rafael (8-2-6, 3-0-1) secured a 3-0 home win against Marin Catholic (4-6-2, 0-4-1). Elvin Calderon and Frisly Reyes scored first-half goals, assisted by Joey Navarette and Cal Stewart, respectively. Stewart added the third goal in the 56th minute, assisted by Dylan Maldonado.
Boys basketball
Marin Academy led for most of the first three quarters but Lick-Wilmerding stormed back with a huge fourth quarter to defeat the Wildcats 73-57.
The Wildcats took a 49-45 lead into the third quarter but were outscored 28-8 in the final 8 minutes. Kainoa Ho hit five 3-pointers en route to a 21-point night for MA (12-8, 0-5 BCL West). Alex Kaludis added 13 points while Trystan Standfield added 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Girls basketball
San Marin is hosting the MB15 Basketball Showcase all day on Saturday with seven consecutive games featuring top teams from Marin against teams from Sonoma/Napa.
The event will be a Pink Out Fundraiser to honor San Marin Hall of Fame player Melissa Boyle, who died last year following her battle with cancer. All proceeds will go to support One Day to Remember.
The schedule begins at 11 a.m., with Marin Academy taking on Santa Rosa. Other matchups — in order — feature Branson-Analy, Tam-Windsor, San Marin-Maria Carrillo, Redwood-Justin-Siena, and Marin Catholic-Cardinal Newman.
- Drew Schultz scored 13 points as Redwood held off a late charge by Marin Catholic to earn a 51-43 home victory on Friday night. Kitty White added 10 for the Giants (14-5, 5-0), who saw their lead trimmed to 38-35 early in the fourth quarter. Bailie Brush scored 13 points for MC (5-11, 2-2) and Ella Hyman added 12. - Marin Academy kept it close for a half before falling 64-26 against Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday. The Wildcats (12-7, 2-3 BCL West) trailed 28-22 at the half before getting outscored 17-2 in the third quarter and 19-2 in the fourth.
Basketball
The Marin County Free Throw Championship returns on Sunday — at Archie Williams High from 8:30-11:30 a.m. — with proceeds from the event going to help the needy in the community through the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
