Yankees Designate Former Red Sox Reliever For Assignment
Former Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Kaleb Ort’s second tenure with the New York Yankees may not last long.
“Earlier today, the Yankees claimed OF Michael Siani off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Yankees have designated RHP Kaleb Ort for assignment,” the Yankees official account posted on X.
The Yankees claimed the 33-year-old off waivers from the Houston Astros on Jan. 9.
Ort originally signed with New York in May 2017, eight months after joining the Arizona Diamondbacks as an amateur free agent.
The Red Sox selected him in the 2020 rule 5 draft and he made his big-league debut in September 2021, pitching just one contest that season.
Ort appeared in 25 games out of Boston’s bullpen during the 2022 campaign and 21 more (two starts) with the organization in 2023, finishing his Red Sox career 2-4 with a 6.27 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings pitched.
The right-hander was selected off waivers by the Seattle Mariners in October 2023 and joined Houston in May 2024.
Ort had his best season in 2024, going 1-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 0.81 WHIP and 26 strikeouts across 24 2/3 innings (22 games). He went 2-2 with a 4.89 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 49 strikeouts over 46 innings (49 games) out of the Astros bullpen last season.
