Andy Robertson could be the next high-profile name to come through the door at Tottenham this month, and we now know why Thomas Frank is so keen to sign the Liverpool ace.
After the signing of Conor Gallagher, it should not really come as much of a surprise that Tottenham are targeting experienced Premier League players.
Indeed, bringing in players of this ilk is exactly what Thomas Frank needs if his Spurs squad are to have any chance of turning around their fortunes.
The news of Tottenham’s pursuit of Andy Robertson came out of the blue, though. But, behind the scenes, it seems this is very much part of the plan for the future at Spurs.
The reason Thomas Frank wants Andy Robertson to sign for Tottenham
A report from The Telegraph sheds some light on the developing situation regarding Robertson, and it’s revealed exactly why Spurs and Frank are so eager to get the deal done.
It’s said Frank was particularly keen on adding Robertson’s “leadership qualities” to his squad, with the Scottish star’s persona and experience sure to be invaluable both on and off the pitch.
The report adds that Robertson is regarded as the type of person “who could drive standards in the dressing-room and take responsibility on the pitch”
It is noted that the injury to Ben Davies may well have forced Tottenham’s hand and made them want to get this deal done now rather than wait until the summer.
By the sounds of it, the plan is for Robertson and Destiny Udogie to compete for the left-back spot, while Djed Spence would end up playing in his preferred right-back role more often.
What we know about Robertson’s wages
Interestingly, Spurs fans are torn on the idea of signing Robertson. In particular, they are unsure why the club has just bought 19-year-old left-back Souza if they are going to bring in Robertson, too.
It will prove to be a relatively costly move for Tottenham, too. The report states Robertson is earning £160,000 a week at Liverpool and there’s no reason to believe he will be taking a pay cut to join the Lilywhites.
That would make him one of the top earners at Tottenham, behind only Cristian Romero, Xavi Simons, and James Maddison. Although, it is unconfirmed what Conor Gallagher currently earns at Spurs.
For a 31-year-old, this may seem out of the ordinary for Spurs. But, as The Telegraph suggests, this is a shift in transfer policy from the days of Daniel Levy, where signing a player over the age of 30 was never really part of the plan.
