Morning Briefing: Stearns to Keep Peralta Extension Talks Private

Good morning, Mets fans!

After an eventful week retooling the team, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns spoke to the media to provide updates and insights on the Mets’ recent moves. In relation to a potential Freddy Peralta extension, Stearns said he will not speculate publicly about a contract extension for Freddy Peralta right now.

He emphasized that the Mets view the trade as acquiring Peralta for the length of his current deal, and while an extension is always possible, it cannot be assumed. For now, the focus is on letting Peralta get acclimated to the team before any discussions.

“I’m not going to speculate on that on Day 1 here,” Stearns said, “We’ll let Freddy get acclimated to the organization, and any conversations that we may have in the future, I think we’re going to do our best to keep private.”

Now onto the morning briefing!

Latest Mets News

The Mets made another roster move via trade, acquiring a versatile bat. The Minnesota Twins announced they traded Vidal Bruján to the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.

To make room on the 40-man roster, a corresponding move followed shortly thereafter. Mike Mayer of Metsmerized reported that the Mets designated left-hander Richard Lovelady for assignment.

The Milwaukee Brewers posted a farewell-style tribute to Peralta, thanking him for his eight seasons after he was dealt to the Mets, alongside Tobias Myers, in exchange for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams. In his eight seasons in Milwaukee, Peralta pitched to the tune of 70 wins and 42 losses, with an ERA of 3.59 across 211 games.

Latest MLB News

The Twins are bringing back a familiar face to anchor their bullpen. Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reported that Minnesota has agreed to a one-year, $2 million deal with Taylor Rogers, reuniting with the former All-Star closer who originally came up through the Twins system.

A potential seismic shift could be coming to the draft landscape. Joe Doyle of OverSlot reported industry chatter suggesting Major League Baseball may be entering the final years of high school players being draft-eligible, which would fundamentally reshape amateur scouting and development.

The Dodgers’ financial advantages may be even bigger than previously thought. Joon Lee, on his X page, noted that because the Dodgers once declared bankruptcy, MLB allows them to be taxed on TV revenue as if they were still financially distressed. This loophole lets the Dodgers keep roughly $66 million more per year, and the exception reportedly runs through 2039.

The New York Yankees announced they claimed Marco Luciano off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

MLB released a new ranking of the top young outfielders in the game. MLB Pipeline unveiled its top 10 outfield prospects list, highlighting a group loaded with elite athleticism.

On This Date in Mets History

1975: Longtime Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1975 as a player. When he retired after 1955, he ranked seventh all-time in home runs and still ranks among the top in slugging percentage and OPS. Yet he struggled for years to gain support, initially receiving just 1.1% of the vote and ultimately getting in 15 years later by a single vote. Voters may have undervalued his .279 batting average and short career, overlooking his elite on-base skills and historical power.
