Trump says large U.S. military fleet heading to Iran
Donald Trump announced the movement of a large U.S. military fleet toward the region, saying Washington is closely monitoring developments inside Iran.
Donald Trump said the United States is dispatching extensive military equipment and a “large fleet” toward the region, stressing that Washington is closely watching developments in Iran. He also claimed U.S. warnings of possible military action led to a halt in executions in the country.
According to Reuters, U.S. military assets, including a carrier strike group, several destroyers and fighter jets, are expected to arrive in the Middle East in the coming days. At the same time, Trump has softened his tone toward Tehran, increasing uncertainty over Washington’s next policy steps.
Reuters quoted two U.S. officials as saying the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, along with multiple warships and combat aircraft, began moving from the Asia-Pacific region last week. The deployment comes amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington following a broad crackdown on protests in Iran.
U.S. officials say the possible deployment of additional air defense systems in the Middle East is also under review. Military experts note that Washington often boosts its regional presence during periods of heightened tension, a move that is not necessarily a prelude to an attack and may be defensive in nature.
Reuters recalls that last summer, ahead of U.S. airstrikes in June on Iran’s nuclear facilities, the American military had already established a broad force posture in the region. U.S. officials later acknowledged that the intent behind those operations had been deliberately concealed.
Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran with military action over the killing of protesters, but his rhetoric eased last week as demonstrations subsided. In recent days, he has also shifted attention to other geopolitical issues, including renewed efforts related to Greenland.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump defended U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling them successful and claiming they prevented further escalation in the Middle East. He warned that if Iran resumes its nuclear program, Washington will respond again, underscoring that uncertainty still surrounds the next steps in U.S. policy toward Tehran.
