Sports Briefs: San Marin muscles past Redwood for mat dominance
San Marin heavyweight David Coronado rolled up Redwood High’s Andres Diaz in the Mustangs’ 49-23 victory over the Giants during a battle of MCAL teams unbeaten entering Thursday’s match.
The Mustangs’ Ben Goffeney (146) got the fall against Chavy Hernandez. Spencer Sisneros (122) scored a 17-1 technical fall over the Giants’ Ayaan Naseer. Levi Manville (152), and Quinn Peterson (159) also won for the Mustangs (4-0). The Giants’ Pedro Martinez (122) narrowly beat Cyrus Vasseghi, 4-3, in a technical thriller, while Dylan Morton (140) and Hayden Schepps (167) also won for Redwood (4-1).
- Tam High’s Dylan Van Doren had a strong showing on the wrestling mat with a pair of wins at 152 pounds as the Red-tailed Hawks beat Novato and San Rafael in a tri-meet on Wednesday. Van Doren scored a 18-1 technical fall over the Bulldogs’ Rio Johnson, and a first-round pin over the Hornets’ Muhammad Abdullah.The Hawks’ Cole Mapp (167) and Lucas Simonton (177) were both winners in Tam’s 48-30 win over Novato and the 69-6 rout of San Rafael. Novato’s Ryan Costa (140) earned mat wins against Tam and San Rafael, while the Hornets’ veteran Braeden Carroll pinned Tam’s Dylan G. Hayes in the only heavyweight match of the day. Novato got wins from Jiriah Vannasy (134), Costa and Keane Brunner (146) in a 46-24 victory over the Bulldogs. San Rafael’s Amy Serrano (177) pinned Novato’s Josue Villasenor, while the Bulldogs also got wins from Nikolai Bruce (167) and Johnson.
Girls soccer
San Rafael and Marin Catholic battled to a 1-1 tie on Thursday night. The Bulldogs (9-1-7, 0-1-3) took a 1-0 lead into the half on a goal by Stefani Brandt, assisted by Darby Fones. The Wildcats (3-5-4, 2-1-2) were able to find a late equalizer.
- Lauren Willard scored four times as Tam rolled to a 9-0 victory against Novato (1-8-1, 0-4-0) on Thursday. The Red-tailed Hawks (5-6-4, 3-0-1) built an 8-0 lead by halftime. Khadijah Wallace and Mia Yolles had a goal and an assist each. Ava McMahon, Mia Burkow, and Abby Chan had the other goals. Talia Leshem had two assists while Allegra Andreoli and Lexi Watts each had one.
- Kaia Amir had a goal and an assist to lead Redwood to a 3-0 win against Terra Linda (6-6-4, 1-2-2) on Thursday. Amir scored on an assist from Zoe Clark for a 1-0 lead then set up a goal by Lily O’Shea at 2-0. Teagan McCormick capped the scoring for Redwood (6-4-4, 3-0-2) with a penalty kick.
- Reese Goodenough, Lily Weaver, and Sadie Goodenough each found the back of the net for Marin Academy in a 3-1 win against Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday. Reese Goodenough scored late in the first half following a free kick taken by Stephanie Zola. Weaver scored in the second half, assisted by Blythe DeGooyer. Sadie Goodenough gave MA (7-2-2, 3-0-2 BCL West) a 3-0 lead before Lick-Wilmerding scored with about 10 minutes left.
- Julia Myerberg scored the lone goal as Branson secured a 1-0 victory at San Marin (8-4-3, 2-2-1) on Thursday night. Myerberg scored on a direct free kick for the Bulls (13-1-2, 3-0-1).
Boys soccer
Marcelo Passas scored the game’s only goal in the second half as San Domenico posted a 1-0 victory against Making Waves Academy on Thursday. Freshman Daniel Almengor had the assist for the Panthers (5-2-1, 3-2-0 BCL West).
- Marin Academy (2-7-4, 1-3-2) saw its winless streak stretch to six games following a 2-0 loss to Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday.
Baseball
