Scottie Scheffler Reacts to Brooks Koepka’s PGA Tour Return
Brooks Koepka is coming back to the PGA Tour, and Scottie Scheffler is fully supportive of the move.
Earlier this month, Koepka announced he would be returning to the PGA Tour following nearly four years on the LIV Golf series. With Koepka's official return on the horizon, Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world, shared his thoughts on the development this week.
Scheffler 'looking forward' to seeing Koepka on the course
The PGA Tour/LIV Golf split sent shockwaves through the golf world and engendered animosity among players on both sides of the aisle. It's clear that Scheffler doesn't have any hard feelings toward Koepka though, judging by his comments on Sirius XM Wednesday.
"I'm excited for Brooks. I'm glad that we were able to get him back on tour," Scheffler said.
Koepka was one of the PGA Tour's biggest stars in the years leading up to his departure. He's won nine events on tour, including five major championships, most recently the 2023 PGA Championship while a member of LIV.
"I think it’s good for the Tour, especially in the long run," Scheffler added. "I think it's great to have a guy who competes out here like Brooks does. I think he's won five majors and a few more tournaments out here on tour. He's a guy that loves to compete. I love being able to compete against him, and I’m looking forward to getting to do that a lot more often this year."
Koepka's return is not without conditions
Koepka can come back to the PGA Tour as part of its "Returning Members Program," which he's eligible for by virtue of winning a major tournament in the last four years.
The 35-year-old has until February 2 to complete the program, which also includes financial penalties such as a five-year forfeiture of the PGA Tour player equity program and a $5 million charitable contribution.
"When I was a child, I always dreamed about competing on the @PGATOUR, and I am just as excited today to announce that I am returning to the PGA TOUR," Koepka wrote in a statement on January 12. "Being closer to home and spending more time with my family makes this opportunity especially meaningful to me. I believe in where the PGA TOUR is headed with new leadership, new investors, and an equity program that gives players a meaningful ownership stake. I also understand there are financial penalties associated with this decision, and I accept those.
"Finally, I want to thank the fans. Your support means more to me today than ever before, and I look forward to seeing you soon at the Farmers Insurance Open and WM Phoenix Open."
