Trump Launches Board of Peace at Davos
U.S. President Donald Trump formally launched a new Board of Peace at Davos, saying it will first focus on stabilising Gaza.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed the charter establishing the Board of Peace, formally announcing its creation at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Speaking alongside several world leaders, Trump said the Board’s initial priority would be supporting peace and stability in Gaza, with a broader global role envisioned later.
The Board is based on a United Nations Security Council resolution linked to Trump’s Gaza peace initiative, positioning it within existing international frameworks.
Some countries have voiced concern that the new body could weaken the role of the United Nations, though Trump said the board would work in cooperation with the UN.
A UN spokesperson said any cooperation with the board of Peace would take place strictly within the framework of the relevant Security Council resolution.
Trump, who will chair the board, has invited countries to join and said permanent members would be required to contribute $1 billion each to its funding.
So far, none of the UN Security Council’s permanent members apart from the United States have joined, while European and other major powers have taken a cautious stance.
However, several regional countries including Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Qatar and Indonesia have signed on, signalling early support for the initiative.
The mixed international response underscores uncertainty over whether the board will complement or complicate existing global peace and diplomacy efforts.
