European Parliament Renews Call to List Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as Terrorist Group
The European Parliament has again voted overwhelmingly to urge the European Union to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
The non-binding resolution was approved on Thursday with a large majority, as lawmakers intensified political pressure on EU institutions over Iran’s security forces.
Out of 628 lawmakers present, 562 voted in favor of the motion, while nine opposed it and 57 abstained, reflecting broad cross-party support.
Although the vote carries strong political weight, it does not automatically change EU policy, as the final and legally binding decision rests with the EU Council.
The European Parliament first made a similar demand in January 2023, following Iran’s violent crackdown on nationwide “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests.
At that time, then EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said such a designation would require a court ruling in an EU member state.
Beyond the Revolutionary Guards issue, the resolution also calls for the expulsion of Iranian diplomats and stronger measures against internet restrictions in Iran.
Meanwhile, European lawmakers said the renewed vote sends a clear signal to Tehran, even as divisions among EU governments continue to delay action.
