Pro-Life Leader Warns Trump, GOP: Don’t Compromise on Hyde Amendment
A prominent pro-life advocate is urging President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers to stand firm against taxpayer funding for abortions, warning that any “flexible” approach could alienate key voters and lead to electoral setbacks in the 2026 midterms.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, highlighted the movement’s historic achievement in overturning Roe v. Wade and credited Trump for his role in appointing three Supreme Court justices who helped secure the landmark decision.
“Three and a half years ago, after 50 years of toil, the pro-life movement achieved the victory of a lifetime in reversing Roe v. Wade, finally freeing the people to take democratic action to protect women and children from abortion,” Dannenfelser wrote in an opinion column published Wednesday in The Washington Post. “By appointing three Supreme Court justices to the majority that handed down the historic decision, President Donald Trump was indispensable to this accomplishment.”

Dannenfelser emphasized the Hyde Amendment — a longstanding policy prohibiting federal funds from being used for most abortions — as a critical compromise that has served as a “bedrock principle” for Republicans for decades.
“Nearly as old as Roe, the Hyde Amendment is already a compromise: If it must be legal to end the lives of fellow human beings, at least do not force Americans to pay for it with their tax dollars,” she wrote. “For decades, opposition to taxpayer funding of abortion and support for the Hyde Amendment has been an unshakeable bedrock principle and a minimum standard in the Republican Party.”
The warning comes amid potential negotiations over health care subsidies and extensions of the Affordable Care Act, where some Republicans have signaled openness to flexibility on abortion-related provisions.
Dannenfelser argued that such moves would betray the pro-life base that helped deliver Republican victories, including the 2022 Dobbs ruling that overturned Roe.
Abandoning or weakening the Hyde Amendment, she said, would be seen as a betrayal following the GOP’s 2024 electoral mandate, which many pro-life groups attribute in part to strong opposition to abortion.
Pro-life voters, who form a significant portion of the Republican coalition, are closely monitoring the administration’s actions, Dannenfelser stressed.
She cautioned that alienating this group could have dire consequences at the ballot box.
“A ‘flexible’ approach to reducing abortion will have a cost in the midterms,” she wrote in the column’s subtitle, underscoring the potential for voter turnout drops or shifts in key swing districts.
Dannenfelser urged Trump and GOP leaders to hold the line on prohibiting federal funding for abortion, describing it as essential to preserving the unity that led to major pro-life advances.
