Patriots’ QB Drake Maye Reveals Challenges Of Using Silent Count Against Broncos
New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye knows he will have to use the silent count on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
The Patriots are set to go on the road to play the Broncos in the AFC Championship Game. Denver has been known to have a loud stadium, and Maye said New England will be using a silent count, which can pose some problems for the offense.
“I use a silent count every road game,” Maye said on Wednesday. “Really, I think every road game this season we’ve used it. I think the loudness of the stadium for this week will be different than what we’ve heard, just because of the AFC Championship at a road opponent that has had history of winning Super Bowls and playing in playoff games and has a great team.
“So, the magnitude of the noise will probably be something we haven’t seen this year yet, but a silent count is something we’ve been working all year. We’ve been in Buffalo and Baltimore using silent counts where it’s tough to hear in the huddle and tough for the O-line to hear me. So, we just go in the silent and we’ve done a good job.”
Although the Patriots’ offense has to use the silent count on Sunday, Maye believes the team will be able to continue to have success. The offense had success in Buffalo and Baltimore, which he will rely on as experience.
In the Patriots’ win over the Houston Texans in the divisional round, Maye did have some struggles as he went 16-of-27 for three touchdowns and an interception. He also fumbled four times and lost two of them.
However, Maye has plenty of confidence in himself that he will be able to have success against the Broncos’ defense to lead the Patriots to a Super Bowl.
New England is a 4.5-point road favorite over Denver. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m. ET on Sunday.
