ASSU Elections Commission presents 2026 election timeline to UGS
The Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Elections Commission gave a presentation to the Undergraduate Senate (UGS) on the 2026 ASSU election timeline at their Wednesday meeting, sharing that the timeline will be shifted up this year.
The Elections Commission administers and oversees ASSU elections, ensuring compliance with the ASSU Constitution and bylaws.
Deputy Elections Commissioner Charlie Schumer J.D. ’28 said that the Elections Commission will be setting the election earlier in the year to align more closely with the pre-COVID elections schedule.
To accomplish this, the first candidate information session will take place on Feb. 11. Candidates must submit their declaration of intent to run by March 13. This will allow campaigning to begin in the second week of spring quarter, with the election planned taking place on April 15 and 16.
Schumer also mentioned other targets for the Election Commission, including clearer and more accessible election codes, updates to election-related platforms to ensure a smooth and secure voting process and a marketing and outreach plan.
“We’re going to try and get as many people to vote as we can, get as many people as we can to know about the election and care about it,” Schumer said.
The UGS also passed the “Bill to Renew the On Call Service Designation,” which will allow On Call Cafe to continue to operate as an ASSU Service Organization. This designation requires On Call to undergo a biannual re-evaluation of its finances and contributions to the campus community.
ASSU Financial Manager and Stanford Student Enterprises (SSE) CEO Johan Sotelo ’25 commented on the continued success of the organization, noting that it has managed to break even while keeping products affordable for students.
“On Call continues to be a popular space… They have been beneficial to the student community,” Sotelo said.
Political Action Committee co-chair Laila Walid Ali ’28 said that the UGS will be having coffee chats at On Call Cafe for students to talk to committee heads.
“Students can come in and talk about whatever they want to see for that committee and help them plan initiatives, things [the UGS] can talk about,” Ali said.
