EU allocates €126m in aid for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran
The European Commission announced a €126 million humanitarian aid package for Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran in 2026 amid worsening global crises.
The European Commission said on Wednesday that the funding forms part of a wider €1.9 billion package allocated to address major humanitarian emergencies worldwide.
According to the commission, the decision comes as an estimated 239 million people globally are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
European officials warned that escalating conflicts, climate-related disasters and economic shocks have placed unprecedented strain on the international aid system.
Afghanistan remains among the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with millions facing food insecurity, displacement and limited access to basic services.
Pakistan and Iran, meanwhile, continue to shoulder the burden of hosting millions of Afghan refugees, placing sustained pressure on public services and national resources.
Hadja Lahbib, the European commissioner for equality, preparedness and crisis management, presented the pledge at the World Economic Forum in Davos, seeking additional private-sector funding.
She said the humanitarian system is under unprecedented pressure and that public financing alone can no longer meet the scale of global needs.
The United Nations estimates that global displacement will exceed 136 million people by the end of the year, while it has appealed for about $1.7 billion to meet Afghanistan’s humanitarian needs in 2026.
