US Transfers 150 ISIS Prisoners from Syria to Iraq Amid Security Concerns
CENTCOM says the US has moved 150 ISIS prisoners from Syria to Iraq as part of a broader plan to secure around 7,000 detainees.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that 150 ISIS prisoners have been safely transferred from a detention facility in Hasakah, Syria, to a secure location in Iraq under US control.
This transfer follows the rapid collapse of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) positions in northeastern Syria, raising concerns over the security of multiple prisons and detention camps under their supervision.
CENTCOM said that ultimately up to 7,000 ISIS detainees could be moved from Syria to US-controlled facilities in Iraq as part of a long-term stabilization and security plan.
The movement of prisoners comes amid renewed conflict in northern Syria, where Kurdish-led forces have lost ground to advancing Syrian government troops, creating instability in detention zones.
The US coordinated closely with regional partners, including the Iraqi government, to ensure the safe transfer and continued security of high-risk ISIS detainees, CENTCOM added.
Admiral Brad Cooper, US military commander for the Middle East, expressed appreciation for regional partners’ cooperation, saying their collaboration is vital for ensuring the sustained defeat of ISIS.
Prior reports indicated that approximately 200 ISIS members escaped from a Syrian prison, though many were recaptured by government forces. Officials warn that thousands of ISIS fighters, women, and children remain in detention facilities across Syria.
CENTCOM emphasized that these transfers are part of a broader effort to mitigate the risk posed by ISIS detainees in Syria and maintain regional stability, while closely coordinating with allies in Iraq and Syria.
