Mets Sign Reliever Luis García
The New York Mets have signed reliever Luis García to a one-year $1.75 million contract with $1.25 million in incentives. Joel Sherman of the New York Post had the signing first and Bob Nightengale of USA Today had the contract details first.
García split time across the 2025 season between the Dodgers, Nationals and Angels and pitched 55.2 innings to a 3.42 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with a 20.6% strikeout rate ad 11.2% walk rate. He brings something the Mets bullpen was missing: velocity. Last year, García averaged 96.9 MPH on his fastball, which was in the 87th percentile. He topped out at 100.7 MPH in 2025.
García is a ground ball king with a 49.7% ground ball rate (82nd percentile) who worked to limit barrels in 2025 with a 7.5% barrel rate (62nd percentile). He primarily throws his 96.9 MPH sinker (42% of the time) and his 82.8 MPH sweeper (32.8% of the time). His sweeper is arguably his best pitch. In 2025 batters hit .182 against it with a .265 SLG.
García’s biggest flaw is his high walk rate. In 2025, he walked 11.2% of batters, which was in the 10th percentile. New Mets pitching coach Justin Willard has worked with pitchers in the zone on attacking the zone, so this may be an area he can help García improve.
This is a low-risk signing that brings velocity to a Mets bullpen that needed it.
