Fabrizio Romano on Man United’s ‘secret’ midfield target — latest details revealed
Manchester United lack adequate depth and quality in midfield, and this is one reason the club have struggled this season.
United are now expected to hold a meeting this week on the possibility of signing a midfielder this month — a contrast to an earlier report that they are unprepared to do so.
However, the Mancunian giants are only prepared to sanction a loan move for any potential target.
AC Milan star Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been linked with United as a prospective signing this month, with his contract expiring in 2027.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have yet to begin talks with the England international or Milan over a prospective move.
He said on his YouTube channel: “Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been linked with Manchester United as a potential secret option for the midfield. However, I am not aware of any contact between United, AC Milan, or the player’s representatives.
“Aston Villa, on the other hand, have openly approached both the player and AC Milan. Milan have also opened new talks with Loftus-Cheek over a contract extension.”
Loftus-Cheek has featured in 23 games across all competitions for Milan this season, but have failed to secure a starting berth.
The 29-year-old could be open to leaving the San Siro in this window, and United should explore the opportunity of signing him if he chooses to do so.
Loftus-Cheek would not find it challenging to settle down at United due to his Premier League experience. He made 157 appearances in the competition before joining Milan in the summer of 2023.
The former Chelsea star can serve an alternative to Kobbie Mainoo, who is now expected to play regularly under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Loftus-Cheek provides strong physical presence in the midfield due to his height and strength. He possesses good control of the ball, can dribble out of tight spaces and is a goal threat.
While he struggles defensively, that weakness can be mitigated by pairing him with Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte, both of whom are more defensive-minded.
