Jelly Roll Reveals Fun New 'Job' He Has This Year
Grammy-nominated singer Jelly Roll has spoken at length about his significant weight loss, which totals over 200 pounds shed since 2020. Dropping the weight has aided his physical and mental health, and has also resulted in some other benefits for the "Save Me" performer.
In a new interview with Extra, Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, revealed that his improved physique has led to him taking a new "job" this winter.
Coach Jelly Roll has arrived
The 41-year-old father of two says he is a "whole different human" and "better father" now that he's slimmed down.
One way Jelly Roll has been able to bond with his children is by serving as his son Noah's youth basketball coach this season.
"I’ve gotten closer to God. I've gotten closer to myself. I'm a better father," he said, via PEOPLE. "I'm more present with my children. You should see it, dude. I mean, I'm coaching my son's basketball team this year."
Weight loss made it all possible
Working with his son and his friends in a hands-on capacity is not something Jelly Roll would have been able to do when he weighed over 500 pounds a few years ago.
"They're kids, like I'm not coaching like a competitive team or anything here, but ... I just feel physically better, and I feel like I can physically do [things]," he explained. "Dude, when you're 550 lbs, you wonder if they have a seat big enough for you, you know what I mean? You definitely don't think about trying to coach a team. You wonder if there's a bench you can sit on, you know? So, it's like for God to just even make that big of a difference [and] to have the weight off ... I'm a whole different human."
Jelly Roll and his son also made a recent public appearance at the Tennessee-Illinois men's college basketball game last month, so hoops is clearly important to them.
What's next for Jelly Roll?
The 2026 Grammy Awards are coming up on Sunday, February 1, and Jelly Roll has three chances to win his first Grammy.
In November, he was nominated for Best Contemporary Country Album (Beautifully Broken), Best Country Duo/Group Performance ("Amen" with Shaboozey) and Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song ("Hard Fought Hallelujah") with Brandon Lake.
“I don’t know how to say it, I want to cry…. Country Album of the Year,” an emotional Jelly Roll said when the news was announced.
