Visitors to the LA Zoo can see birds from across the globe in a ‘free-flight presentation’
Visitors to the Los Angeles Zoo can see birds from across the world in “free-flight” demonstrations during the zoo’s Angela Collier World of Birds Show — where trained birds, including the California Condor, fly freely in an open space.
Dominick Dorsa, L.A. Zoo Director of Animal Care, said, “The Angela Collier World of Birds Show is so much more than a thrilling demonstration of birds and their abilities and adaptations. The Bird Show draws audiences in to see animals they may never otherwise see, and educates them on the plight of their species in the wild and how Los Angeles Zoo is working to save these species from extinction.”
During the half-hour show, animal keepers raise awareness of the conservation efforts at LA Zoo, engage with the audience about the perils of keeping exotic animals as pets, and inform visitors of the critical roles each bird plays in the environment.
L.A. Zoo Senior Animal Keeper Greg Pontoppidan said, “It’s exciting to see guests engaged in the Angela Collier World of Birds Show as it’s happening in real time. What’s even more exciting is when guests foster connections with these animals and learn more about them, including the endangered and critically endangered birds we help to care for here at the Zoo and support in the wild.”
Pontoppidan said the show “is crucial to educating our guests about the conservation work the Zoo is doing here in Los Angeles and across the world, including our partnership with the historic California Condor Recovery Program, which the Zoo has helped pioneer since the 1980s, and supporting critically endangered species such as the blue-throated macaw.”
The show is daily at noon except on Tuesdays.
