SMU defeats Wake Forest for second road win of season
BJ Edwards scored 24 points as SMU picked up just its second road win of the season on Tuesday night by beating Wake Forest 91-79 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Edwards stuffed the stat sheet and did a little bit of everything for the Mustangs (14-5, 3-3 ACC) by piling up eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals. SMU also got 12 points and six assists from Boopie Miller, 13 points from Jaron Pierre Jr., and 10 points and nine rebounds from Jaden Toombs.
Juke Harris powered Wake Forest (11-8, 2-4) with 27 points. Myles Colvin added 17 points while Tre'Von Spillers chipped in 19.
The Demon Deacons had a three-point lead in the game's opening moments after Harris and Colvin each sank 3-pointers. The two sides kept things close for most of the first half, until SMU ended the frame with a 14-6 run capped off by a deep 3-pointer from Toombs that Edwards provided the assist on.
Edwards then opened the second half by connecting on a 9-foot floater to give SMU a double-digit advantage. The Mustangs would go on to lead by as much as 22 points after a 14-7 run late in the second half that was bookended by 3-pointers from Pierre and Sam Walters.
SMU shot 50 percent from the floor and 3-point land, the third time it's done that this season.
The Mustangs led for 89 percent of the game and also won the rebounding battle against Wake, 40-28.
Wake Forest has not won back-to-back games in more than a month. The Deacs' schedule doesn't get any easier as they play at No. 5 Duke on Saturday.
