White Sox trade Luis Robert Jr. to the Mets
The White Sox traded center fielder Luis Robert Jr. to the Mets Tuesday night, a source confirmed to the Sun-Times.
The Sox are receiving prospects Luisangel Acuna and Truman Pauley. Pauley is a right-hander whom the Mets drafted in 2025. Acuna, brother of Ronald Acuna Jr., is a super utility player that is playing in the outfield in the Venezuelan Winter League.
Robert was the last remaining trade piece that general manager Chris Getz inherited from the previous regime. Robert had been in constant trade rumors over the past two seasons. Before 2025 Opening Day, Robert said he was surprised that he hadn't been dealt in the offseason.
The oft-injured center fielder exploded on the scene with his combination of power and speed. His 2023 All-Stars season that saw him belt 38 homers with a .857 OPS is still regarded as one of the best in team history. He wowed people with his athleticism in center field, one aspect of his game that is considered a plus trait.
But injuries ultimately derailed Robert's career as he cratered at the plate. Over the past two seasons, Robert has slashed .223/.288/.372 with 28 homers. He became a symbol of the underachieving core that ultimately failed in its pursuit of winning a World Series.
Getz picked up the $20 million option on Robert this offseason after deciding to hold onto him at last season's trade deadline. At the winter meetings in December, Getz said that teams were still calling on Robert.
Despite being effusive in his praise of Robert in public, many felt that it was only a matter of time before the outfielder was dealt. On Tuesday, Getz received a package that he felt was enticing enough to part ways with Robert.
