Fatal crash closes all westbound lanes of San Mateo Bridge
FOSTER CITY – All westbound lanes of the San Mateo Bridge were closed following a fatal crash Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.
The collision happened around 2:45 p.m. at the mid-span, according to the California Highway Patrol.
All westbound lanes were shut down in the wake of the crash, snarling the afternoon commute. They were not expected to reopen until late Tuesday, CHP Officer Sophie Lu said.
Commuters were advised to use alternate routes.
The crash involved a sedan and a van, Lu said. The sedan was stalled when it was rear-ended by the van.
The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, Lu said.
The driver of the van was not injured, but their passenger was taken to an area hospital.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, but alcohol and drugs did not appear to play a role, Lu said.
