TikTok Scams Are Surging—Here Are 5 Ways to Protect Yourself Right Now

Over the past several years, TikTok has emerged as a social media force, with it especially capturing the attention of young people. A recent Shopify article revealed that 65% of TikTok users are aged 18-34. That article's main focus was giving guidance to marketers about how to promote products on the platform in 2026. Unfortunately, some TikTok marketers and sellers have contributed to a surge in scams, but this article will provide valuable tips on how to avoid those pitfalls.

5 Simple Ways to Stay Safe From TikTok Scams

The prevalence of scams on TikTok became so notable that the Better Business Bureau published an article cautioning users to remain vigilant in November 2022. More recently, the website Flip Flow warned that generative AI has caused "an explosion of fake listings, non-existent products and phantom sellers."

In January 2026, the team at the digital game store Loaded put together a list of five ways that TikTok users can protect themselves from being scammed. The valuable information they provided gives people easy methods to avoid being taken advantage of on TikTok Shop.

Understand TikTok Protections and Only Use Secure Payment Options:

TikTok provides buyer protection, including refunds within 30 days in most cases and 90 days in rare instances, for purchased products that never arrive, are different from their description, or are defective. It is also important to note that sellers can be reported to the social media network. Buyers who don't get what was promised to them should take full advantage of both of those programs while remembering that they have their limitations. With that in mind, Loaded advises only making TikTok purchases through means like PayPal and credit cards that offer fraud protection.

Don’t Trust Videos That Appear "Too Good To Be True":

While some people sincerely go on TikTok to share information about products that genuinely impressed them, others make money from being paid to promote items on TikTok. Paid-for promotional videos are supposed to be labeled on TikTok, so check if an account has made a deal to sing the praises of something that is for sale before you buy anything. The video may have been made by someone who has never even tried using what they are talking about. Also, if claims are being made about what a product is capable of doing that seem unrealistic, don't take that at face value. Instead of making an impulse purchase, remain skeptical and gauge if you would buy something if you hadn't just seen a video extolling its virtues.

Research Seller Information:

Before making a TikTok purchase, shoppers should research the seller to have the best chance of buying from someone who is trustworthy. While there is no way to know that for sure, there are several indications to look for. First and foremost, only make purchases from verified sellers by looking for the blue check mark. Next, ensure that any seller you are buying from has strong ratings and reviews from other users. Buyers should also research whether the seller has an online presence off the app, and whether they offer clear ways to contact them if there are problems with a purchase. If a seller meets all those criteria, they are more likely to be legitimate.

Be Aware of Which Products Are High Risk for Being a Scam:

Anything that is being sold can be the subject of fraud. However, some product categories are more likely to be targeted by scammers. Electronics tend to be expensive and aren't subject to safety checks, so only buy them from verified sellers who have high-quality photos of what they are selling. Health and beauty products also tend to be a risky social media purchase, so double check off the app if they are as good as the promotional material claims.

Research Prices and Trust Your Instincts:

Most people love feeling like they have gotten a great deal. As such, it can be very tempting to quickly buy something if it is on sale at a steep discount for fear of missing out. However, if a price is unreasonably cheap, treat it as suspicious. If you can't understand why someone would sell a product at such a low price, it is wise to steer clear. On top of that, if you are looking into buying a product from TikTok Shop and something doesn't feel right, like if the seller seems unprofessional, trust your instincts.
