'Marty Supreme' Surpasses a Record-Breaking Box Office Milestone
Marty Supreme has become A24's highest-grossing movie in North America after reaching $80 million at the domestic box office, surpassing the previous record of $77 million held by Everything Everywhere All At Once.
While the 2023 Best Picture winner remains A24's most profitable project worldwide, Marty Supreme could easily overtake that mantle once it releases in more countries. The film is currently only showing in a select number of territories, which don't include major box office contributors such as Germany, Brazil, India, and China.
Josh Safdie's film centers around a semi-fictional table tennis player named Marty Mauser, who undertakes a series of desperate ploys in order to pull together enough money to attend the sport's world championship in Japan. The film has been warmly recieved by critics and general audiences alike, sitting at an impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Much of Marty Supreme's box office success can be put down to the film's historic press run, which saw lead actor Timothée Chalamet step into the public eye for a series of bold stunts—including climbing the Las Vegas Sphere, lighting up the Empire State Building, and reviving his "Lil Timmy Tim" alter ego to jump on a track with UK underground rapper Esdeekid.
Marty Supreme also benefits from its Christmas Day release window, which helped the film achieve a strong opening of $27 million throughout the festive period.
But with a reportedly large budget of $70 million, it could still be a while before Marty Supreme proves profitable for A24. The film has grossed $97 million worldwide, and a film is generally not considered a financial success until it makes at least 2.5x its original budget back at the box office to account for promotion and marketing.
Luckily, Marty Supreme's ongoing success on the awards circuit means its cultural impact won't be going away any time soon. Chalamet has already proved victorious at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, and reliable outlets like Variety and GoldDerby predict him to be a leading contender for the Oscars in March. This could reliably push Marty Supreme even higher up A24's box office charts as it continues to release across the world in the coming months.
