Deadly blast hits Kabul hotel in Shahr-e-Naw
A powerful explosion struck a hotel in Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw district, killing several people and injuring others, officials said.
An explosion struck a hotel area in central Kabul on Monday, causing casualties, as witnesses said Chinese nationals were the main target.
Khalid Zadran, spokesman for the Taliban police command in Kabul, confirmed that Monday’s explosion in the Golforoshi alley caused casualties. He said the blast occurred inside a hotel and an investigation is under way to determine the number and nature of the victims.
Video footage shows damage to the signboard and parts of the Chinese restaurant “Lanzhou Beef Noodles” in the Shahr-e-Naw area of Kabul, indicating the force of the blast.
Witnesses said both Chinese nationals and Afghan civilians were wounded in the explosion. Some residents said the attack may have been carried out by a suicide bomber, though this has not been independently verified.
Residents reported hearing a “powerful” explosion on Monday, with images showing thick smoke, injured people lying on the ground, and civilians fleeing the scene in panic.
China has previously expressed concerns about the safety of its citizens and interests in Afghanistan, particularly after a series of attacks targeting Chinese nationals in recent years.
Security in Kabul remains fragile despite Taliban claims of stability, with sporadic explosions and attacks continuing to raise concerns about the group’s ability to prevent militant violence.
The latest blast underscores persistent security challenges in the Afghanistan capital, as authorities investigate amid fears of renewed targeting of foreign nationals.
