Trump says Denmark failed to counter Russian threat in Greenland, now it’s time
US President Donald Trump accused Denmark of failing to counter Russian threats in Greenland, renewing demands for US ownership of the strategic island.
Donald Trump said Denmark has failed to take action to remove what he called the “Russian threat” from Greenland, escalating his long-running pressure campaign over the Arctic territory.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump said NATO had warned Denmark for 20 years about Russian risks in Greenland, adding that “now is the time” for action.
Trump has repeatedly said he will accept nothing less than ownership of Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, arguing it is vital to US national security.
Leaders in Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the idea, stressing the island is not for sale and has no desire to become part of the United States.
Greenland holds major strategic importance due to its location between North America and Europe, hosting US military facilities and lying near key Arctic shipping routes.
Melting Arctic ice has intensified global competition in the region, with Russia and China expanding their presence and investment, raising concerns among NATO allies.
Trump also said two days earlier that he would impose sweeping tariff increases on European allies until the United States is allowed to purchase Greenland.
He claimed that if Washington does not gain control of Greenland, Russia or China eventually would, a statement Denmark has dismissed as unfounded.
Trump’s remarks have sharpened tensions with European allies, highlighting growing geopolitical rivalry in the Arctic and renewed debate over Greenland’s future.
