Le Tissier and Drury steal the spotlight as Man United Women thrash Burnley in FA Cup
Manchester United Women cruised to a 5-0 victory over Burnley in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at Progress With Unity Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Lea Schuller and Hanna Lundkvist made their full debuts, while Ellen Wangerheim, whose arrival was announced on Friday, came off the bench.
Captain Maya Le Tissier opened the scoring inside 90 seconds, collecting the ball inside Burnley’s half and arrowing a shot into the top corner from 30 yards.
Simi Awujo went close to doubling United’s lead, curling the ball towards the far post, but goalkeeper Kirstie Levell parried it away.
Man United doubled their lead when Dominique Janssen’s cross was cleared, and the ball fell nicely to Julia Zigiotti Olme, who picked out the top corner from the edge of the box.
Burnley had their first sight of goal after the half-hour mark, with Claudia Mummery-Walker seeing her shots blocked in close succession.
Awujo extended the Red Devils’ lead, curling the ball into the far corner.
Melvine Malard almost added to the advantage before the break with a close-range header, but was denied by the woodwork.
Shortly after the restart, Man United made it 4-0 following a good team move. Awujo threaded a pass to Janssen, who whipped a cross to Schuller to apply the finish.
16-year-old winger Layla Drury, making her debut, completed the scoring with a calm finish to rapturous applause from the home crowd.
Man United are back in action on Wednesday evening, facing Arsenal in the Women’s League Cup semi-final.
