Sports Briefs: Bench boosts San Marin girls past Las Lomas
Eleanna Schram scored a team-high 12 points as San Marin earned a 45-33 non-league girls basketball victory over Las Lomas in Saturday’s duel between top-50 ranked teams. Alaina McDowel added 11 points and Megan McCune had six with strong efforts off the San Marin bench.
The Mustangs (13-6, 3-0 MCAL) are the No. 18 team in the North Coast Section, according to MaxPreps, while the Knights are ranked 49th. San Marin is scheduled to host Tam in a MCAL game on Tuesday, before taking on No. 23-ranked Maria Carrillo on Saturday, Jan. 24.
- Kitty White scored a team-high 14 points but the Giants’ scoring was limited in Saturday’s 46-36 non-league loss to Acalanes. Brooke Denler and Hindi Copeland scored 10 points each, while Maddie Petersmeyer rounded out the scoring with two points as the Giants were held to nearly 26 percent shooting. Redwood trailed by just nine points at the break, before the Dons pulled away with a 15-point lead in the third quarter.
- Simone Claxton hit six 3-pointers as Marin Catholic (4-10, 1-1) rolled to a home win past San Rafael, 64-15, on Friday. Claxton finished with a team-high 21 points to go with four rebounds and four steals. Lyla Gonzalez added nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, while Cece Biernat also had nine points for the Wildcats. Makayla Marsten had a balanced game with seven points and eight rebounds, while Krystal Rose Huff had a big impact with four points, seven rebounds and two blocks. The Bulldogs (6-8, 0-3) will try to end their three-game skid on Jan. 23 against Novato.
- San Domenico earned a 54-44 victory at home over Urban on Friday as the Panthers (7-9, 2-2 BCL) evened their league record. The fourth-place Panthers have a week off before they take on second-place Lick-Wilmerding on Saturday, Jan. 24.
- Marin Academy fell 56-25 to BCL_ leader University on Friday. The Wildcats (12-5, 2-2) are scheduled to face Gregori in non-league action on Monday in Fairfield.
Boys basketball
San Marin High roared to a 83-42 victory over Vintage during the Martin Luther King-John Lewis Memorial on Saturday. The Mustangs (11-9, 1-2 MCAL) have a key matchup against Tam on Tuesday that could go a long way to determining the seeding for the MCAL playoffs.
- Marin Catholic rolled to a 68-49 victory over Sacred Heart Prep at Saturday’s MLK-John Lewis Memorial Showcase at San Marin High. The Wildcats (16-2, 2-0) enter a challenging week against MCAL rival Archie Williams, Redwood and Branson.
- Novato resident Dylan Chelew scored 24 points for St. Vincent in Friday night’s 64-50 victory over Piner. Jack Ellis, another Novato resident, added 12 points for the Mustangs (10-4, 4-0 NBL), who face St. Bernard’s on Monday. St. Vincent is scheduled to host Terra Linda in a non-league contest on Saturday, Jan. 24.
- Marin Academy (12-7, 0-4) fell to BCL leader University, 85-39, in San Rafael on Friday. The Wildcats are scheduled to play Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday.
- San Domenico (15-6, 3-2 BCL) fell 60-45 to a tough Urban squad on Friday. Omar Williams hit five 3-pointers to lead the Panthers offense, while Ika Jokhadze had 12 points. The Panthers have a non-league game at Casa Grande on Monday.
Boys soccer
Sean Chamberlin scored to put Archie Williams in front but Andrew Miles equalized for San Marin in a 1-1 draw on Saturday. The goal for Archie Williams (7-3-2, 2-0-1 MCAL) was assisted by Henry Miller. Miles scored on a direct free kick for the Mustangs (0-7-5, 0-1-2).
- Tom Downie scored for Marin Academy in a 1-1 draw against Redwood (3-3-3) on Saturday. Jack Murphy got the assist for MA (2-6-3) on a free kick into the box.
Girls soccer
Freshman Stefani Brandt scored all the goals as San Rafarl rolled to a 4-0 against Concord on Saturday. Darby Fones assisted on two of the goals for the Bulldogs (8-1-5), who travel to Terra Linda for a crucial midseason MCAL game on Tuesday.
- Marin Catholic scored a late equalizer but Las Lomas went back in front on the final kick of the game to secure a 3-2 victory on Saturday. MC (3-4-3) tied the game at 1-1 when Nora Snearly set up a goal for Savannah Browne. MC tied the game again in the final four minutes when Claire Hunnewell assisted a goal for Siena White.
- Redwood (4-4-4) fell 3-0 at home against Berkeley on Saturday.
Track and field
San Rafael’s Ellie McCuskey-Hay was a triple-winner with the Marin Waves Track Club in Saturday’s All Comers Meet at Los Gatos, a qualifier for the California High School Winter Championships. McCuskey-Hay won the 60 meter in 7.71 seconds and the 150 meter in 18.73 seconds. She had the top mark in the long jump at 18 feet, 11 inches, as she secured a berth in the Winter Championships in all three events.
Grace Bramble placed third in the triple jump (32’10”) and seventh in the long jump (15’2.5”) in the girls high school class.
Noa Schachter placed 11th in the 60 meter hurdles in 11.68 seconds, while she was 34th in the 60 meter (9.48) and 31st in the 150 meter (23.47), all personal-best times. Teammate Indeya Sanders was 22nd in the 60 meter (8.70), while Jasmine Giavina was 23rd with a personal-best 8.72. Giavina was 28th in the 150 meter in 21.98 seconds, another personal best. Juno Phipps was 24th in the 60 meter (8.73) and 24th in the 150 meter (21.55), while Allison McCarthy was 28th in the 150 meter with a personal-best 21.98. Alexas Dennes ran personal-best times in the 60 meter (9.03, 29th) and 150 meter (21.71, 26th).
In the boys middle school competition, Alexander Davis took first place in the 600 and 1500 meter races. He ran a personal-best 1:56.04 in the 600 to finish 17th overall and was 26th overall in the 1500 (5:11.22)
Zane Chu ran a PR of 20.37 in the 150 meter to take second in the middle school class, 33rd overall, and edge Davis, who ran a PR of 22.08 to take third in the middle school class, 38th overall. Chu was second in the middle school class, 39th overall, in the 60 meter with a PR of 8.41.
Basketball
The 24/8 Academy will present a MLK Basketball Skills Day with former Terra Linda High star Kenny Woodard on Monday at St. Vincent’s School in San Rafael. The camp welcomes boys and girls from third grade through middle school.
“We want to make sure at each workout, to ask players what they are thankful for, why are they playing this game,” said Woodard, the CEO and founder of the 24/8 Academy. “We want them to know what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. We are coming together to forge relationships through the game of basketball.”
