Tottenham player ratings vs West Ham as Cristian Romero shines but 4/10 wide man struggles

We saw a far better second-half showing from Tottenham against West Ham but it still wasn’t enough, and we’ve rated all the Lilywhites players from the game.

A dismal first half saw Tottenham trailing at half-time and showing no signs of control over the match, with Crysencio Summerville’s goal splitting the two teams.

Our Spurs player ratings for the first half were filled with poor scores, Mathys Tel and Guglielmo Vicario aside. However, things certainly improved after the interval.

A brilliant Cristian Romero header levelled the scores just after the hour-mark, and it was all Tottenham from there on out.

However, Thomas Frank’s men were unable to find a way through the Hammers’ defence a second time. Then, in the dying moments, it was the away team and Callum Wilson who stole the win and took the three points with a scrappy goal from a corner.

The fans at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were not happy at full-time and neither are we…

Tottenham full-time player ratings vs West Ham

Guglielmo Vicario – 5

Kept Spurs in the game in the first half with a couple of big saves. A lot less busy in the second half and looked like this was going to be one of the better showings from Guglielmo Vicario in recent weeks, until he flapped at a corner and cost his team the game. Enough is enough, he has to be dropped.

Pedro Porro – 7

Had a pretty poor first half after getting run ragged by Summerville, but Pedro Porro really stepped up after the break. Provided a great assist for the goal and had lots more freedom and success going forward. Made an immense block late on, but Tottenham still conceded from the corner.

Cristian Romero – 8

Did enough to keep the Spurs backline relatively calm and steady going into half-time despite their struggles, and the captain well and truly elevated his game in the second half. A fine goal, a leader’s performance, and an outstanding array of passes made, too.

Micky van de Ven – 7

Not quite as impactful as his defensive partner, but van de Ven got the better of the West Ham attackers in the end and had an uneventful, very solid outing today.

Djed Spence – 5

Obviously, being thrown into the match after 15 minutes is not ideal, but Spence will be disappointed with himself. Offered very little going forward, lost most of his duels, and kept committing fouls.

Archie Gray – 6

Didn’t do anything particularly remarkable in that first half but impressed enough with his combative play and eagerness to get involved. It’s a shame he didn’t feature after half-time.

Conor Gallagher – 5

All eyes were on Conor Gallagher, but he did not have a good debut. Struggled to get a hold of the midfield battle, lost possession quite a lot, and needs to improve his passing in the attacking third.

Wilson Odobert – 4

Sadly, Odobert was the worst Spurs player on the pitch today. He showed glimpses of promise but every time he carried the ball forward it just came to nothing.

Xavi Simons – 5

Had a terrible first half, but improved in the second. Still, Xavi Simons’ passing was sloppy, although he did create a few decent chances. We simply expect more from the playmaker, and he’s a victim of his own high standards at times. Had a good effort late on in the game but was denied by Areola.

Mathys Tel – 7

Had a really good first half and looked the most likely to get Spurs back in the game. It’s a shame he was replaced as Tel definitely looked like he was going to make something happen.

Randal Kolo Muani – 5

Why he remained on the pitch is beyond me. The forward had so little impact that I forgot he was playing at times. He really needs to step up and get himself in the thick of the action rather than waiting for chances to fall his way.

Yves Bissouma – 6

It was quite the surprise to see Bissouma at all, but he came on and held his own in the midfield. He didn’t necessarily do anything special or especially impactful, but he did the simple stuff well.

Dominic Solanke – 5

It’s great to see Solanke back on the pitch, but we need more from the big man. Offered some decent hold-up play here and there, but when the ball is played into the box he has to be pushing himself to get in front of his man and get on the end of it.

Lucas Bergvall – N/A

Only had six minutes of action so no rating given.

Ben Davies – N/A

Injured early in the first half so no rating given.
