Venezuelan Opposition Leader Says U.S., Trump Will Support Country’s Return to Democracy
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said President Trump and the United States are committed to supporting Venezuela’s democratic transition and stabilizing the country.
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado expressed full support for the United States and its role in facilitating a democratic transition in her country.
Machado spoke at a press conference on Friday at the Heritage Foundation, saying Venezuela could become the U.S.’s closest ally in the Americas once a stable transition is achieved.
The press conference followed Machado’s brief meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday, where she presented her views on Venezuela’s political future.
In recent weeks, Maduro loyalists have faced increased international pressure, while U.S. and allied operations in Caracas have targeted top officials, reflecting growing concern over democratic backsliding in Venezuela.
Machado praised Trump’s recent military operation in Caracas, which led to the detention of Nicolás Maduro and his transfer to New York for prosecution, describing it as courageous support for the Venezuelan people.
The opposition leader also highlighted that interim President Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former deputy, faces “tough and complex” responsibilities during the democratic transition and that her government is carrying out essential groundwork.
Machado stressed that, despite U.S. backing for Rodríguez’s interim administration, Venezuela’s opposition retains a mission to lead the country through the transitional period and is prepared to assume full responsibility.
