Trump Thanks Iran for Cancelling Execution of More Than 800 Protesters
President Donald Trump thanked Iran’s leadership on Friday for cancelling the planned execution of over 800 protesters, a decision he said eased immediate tensions.
Donald Trump said Iran’s leaders deserved credit for cancelling the planned executions of more than 800 protesters, a move he said helped avert further escalation.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the U.S. president said the executions had been scheduled for Friday but were called off at the last moment by Iranian authorities.
Trump told reporters that the cancellation influenced his own decision-making, saying no one persuaded him against military action and that Iran’s move had a “big impact.”
Iran has been rocked by weeks of nationwide protests, with demonstrators demanding political change and accountability amid a heavy-handed security crackdown.
Human rights organisations say Iranian authorities have increasingly used the death penalty as a tool of intimidation, drawing condemnation from Western governments and international bodies.
Trump has repeatedly warned Tehran against killing or executing protesters, saying Iran would face severe consequences if it carried out mass executions.
He said early on Thursday that he had received credible intelligence indicating that executions and killings had been halted, easing immediate tensions.
Rights groups, however, say more than 2,000 people have been killed and thousands detained during the unrest, warning that pressure on Iran must continue to prevent further abuses.
