GameStop has found itself in some hot water this week after criticizing the first-look photo of Sophie Turner as Lara Croft in the upcoming Amazon Tomb Raider series.
The large gaming retail store quoted IGN‘s post sharing the image and said, “This is not Lara Croft.”

The repost went viral, with many users defending Sophie and the overall look of the character, which many feel accurately represents Lara Croft’s design from the early games. Her look is very clearly inspired by the series’ original timeline started in 1996.
GameStop’s comment also invited a wave of fresh criticism to the company.
A popular film critic quoted their tweet and said, “This is not a game store,” along with photos of the shop’s inventory. The stores now sell a significant amount of merch like backpacks, Funko pops, figurines, and more, something gamers have become frustrated over since they feel it takes away from space for selling actual games.
