Promotions and new faces in the newsroom
Business Insider
The following newsroom members have received well-deserved promotions:
Emma Cosgrove is our new Editorial Director of AI Innovation. As many of you know, Emma came to us several months ago with a great curiosity about how AI could make us an even-better news operation. For the last several months, she has been acting as a coach, trainer, editorial advisor, and company-wide partner on all things AI. In her new role, she will officially lead our efforts to optimize our uses of this tech across our newsroom. Emma joined Business Insider as a logistics reporter, completed the Knight Bagehot fellowship, and most recently covered chip companies. She will report to Julie Zeveloff.
Last year, I had asked Julia Hood to add AI to her brief to help us explore and test this technology. Julia did a terrific job, engaging the newsroom and setting us on a strong course. Julia is now going to return her focus fully to special projects and partnerships, where she will continue her crucial cross-team leadership and also pursue several ambitious new projects. I thank Julia for all she did to help get us going.
Mia de Graaf has been promoted to Executive Editor on the Life team. In the past year, Mia led our extraordinary young cancer coverage, which started in the Life team and, under Mia's leadership, expanded to include the Econ team, Discourse and Video. Overall, this coverage has been a model for what we seek to do, and Mia's ambition, creativity, collaborative spirit, and care are a great part of its success. In the EE role, Mia will continue to lead the Health team and also work across Life and the newsroom to have a greater hand in shaping distinguishing coverage. Mia has worked at Business Insider for six years, joining as Health Editor in January 2020. Mia will return from parental leave later in the spring.
Julia Hornstein has been promoted from Reporter I to Reporter II. Julia is on a roll covering defense tech, including her recent profile of Palmer Luckey. She has scored several scoops and done a number of strong features with Discourse. She moves to the heat, with determination and ambition. Recently, Julia won the New York Newswomen's Club Award for Best New Journalist. Originally a fellow with us, Julia will report to EE Leena Rao and also start working with Ali Barr on a regular contribution to our Tech Memo newsletter.
Alice Tecotzky has moved to the finance desk, where she'll now be covering JPMorgan and other big banks. Alice spent the first year after her fellowship covering Wall Street, wealth, and politics. She did crucial work on our Doge coverage, and already has been reporting on bank culture including JP Morgan's new building and — tough assignment — Hamptons life. Alice will report to senior finance editor Michelle Abrego.
And finally, a warm welcome to the new class of fellows. Some have already joined, and some will be joining in the next couple weeks. The January class will be on board for 6 months and are working from the London and New York offices.
