Golden Retriever Rescued After 'Falling Through Thin Ice' & Spending 30 Minutes in Freezing Pond

A golden retriever who was trapped in a freezing pond was reunited with her family with the help of the local police and fire departments.

On Tuesday (January 13), the Spring Arbor Township Police Department in Michigan responded to a call about a dog named Mia, who “fell through thin ice on a private pond,” according to a news release.

She was reportedly about 30 yards from shore and had been submerged in the freezing water for roughly 30 minutes. At that point, she was “struggling to keep its head above water.”

“While en route, the officer recognized the potential need for specialized cold-water rescue equipment and requested assistance from the Spring Arbor Township Fire Department,” per the statement.

They reached out to the Spring Arbor Fire Department, who arrived on the scene with “specialized cold-water rescue equipment.”

Responders from the fire department went into the pond using their gear and brought Mia to safety, with the township reporting that “she appeared to be in stable condition.”

“Quick thinking and inter-agency coordination between the Spring Arbor Township Police Department and Spring Arbor Township Fire Department led to the successful rescue of a dog that fell through ice on a private pond today,” the statement reads.

Providing a warning to pet owners, the police department urged them to “exercise extreme caution around frozen bodies of water, as ice thickness can vary and pose serious risks to both pets and people.”
