NHL roundup: Knights top Leafs in OT after tying it late

Jack Eichel scored the game-winner at 2:44 of overtime and also had three assists as the Vegas Golden Knights rallied for a wild 6-5 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Eichel, cutting down the slot, took a pass from Mark Stone, deked Toronto goalie Joseph Woll and then roofed a backhand shot to extend the Golden Knights' season-high winning streak to a six games. Vegas' Tomas Hertl tied the game with seven seconds left in regulation.

Pavel Dorofeyev scored a pair of power-play goals, Stone had a goal and two assists, Hertl recorded two points and Keegan Kolesar also scored for the Golden Knights.

Mitch Marner, who heard his share of boos from Maple Leafs fans who made the trip from Toronto, had two assists in his first game against his former team since going to the Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade deal for center Nicolas Roy on July 1.

Islanders 1, Oilers 0

Ilya Sorokin made 35 saves for his league-leading fifth shutout of the season as New York defeated host Edmonton.

Anthony Duclair ended the long scoring stalemate at 13:42 of the third period. New York was on its first power play of the game after Leon Draisaitl went to the penalty box for tripping Matthew Schaefer, and Calum Ritchie set Duclair up for a snap shot past Connor Ingram.

Connor McDavid had his 20-game points streak end in the loss, the longest such streak in the NHL since the Toronto Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner had a 23-game run in the 2022-23 season.

Penguins 6, Flyers 3

Sidney Crosby scored a goal and an assist and added to his resume for Pittsburgh, which recharged its power play and ended a three-game losing streak in emphatic fashion against visiting Philadelphia.

Crosby's two points give him 51 for the season, the 19th time the 38-year-old has enjoyed a 50-point season. That ties Wayne Gretzky and Alex Ovechkin for sixth all-time in NHL history. He also now has 100 assists against the Flyers (playoffs included). He also has 103 assists against the New York Islanders, making him the sixth player to rack up 100 or more helpers against multiple teams.

All 12 forwards got at least a point for the Penguins, who were 3-for-4 on the power play. Stuart Skinner gave up a couple late goals but still finished with 30 saves for his fourth win in five starts.

Sharks 3, Capitals 2

Zack Ostapchuk, Collin Graf and Pavol Regenda scored within a three-minute stretch in the second period to lead San Jose to victory at Washington, the Sharks' seventh win in nine games.

Graf and Regenda each finished with a goal and an assist and Alex Nedeljkovic made 21 saves for San Jose, which trailed 1-0 when it began its scoring barrage.

Dylan Strome and Ryan Leonard tallied for the Capitals, who have alternated losses and wins over the past seven games. Logan Thompson stopped 23 shots.

Jets 6, Wild 2

Mark Scheifele had a goal and three assists as Winnipeg matched its season-high goal total in a win at Saint Paul, Minn.

Gabriel Vilardi, Jonathan Toews and Josh Morrissey each finished with a goal and an assist for the Jets, who won their fourth in a row. Logan Stanley and Tanner Pearson also scored. For Toews, the points were the 900th and 901st of his career. Logan Stanley and Tanner Pearson also scored, and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 32 shots.

Danila Yurov and Marcus Johansson scored for the Wild, who have lost three straight (0-2-1). Jesper Wallstedt allowed six goals on 20 shots. Filip Gustavsson replaced him in the third period and stopped all nine shots he faced.

Bruins 4, Kraken 2

Boston scored twice in the first four minutes of the first period and never trailed, completing the sweep of a five-game homestand with a win over visiting Seattle.

Mark Kastelic's short-handed goal at 4:40 of the second period was the eventual game-winner. Marat Khusnutdinov, Viktor Arvidsson and David Pastrnak also scored for the Bruins, while Charlie McAvoy had two assists. Jeremy Swayman made 26 saves en route to his third straight victory.

Chandler Stephenson and Eeli Tolvanen lit the lamp for the Kraken, who are 1-2-1 since an 8-0-2 run. Massachusetts native Joey Daccord made 20 stops.

Mammoth 2, Stars 1

Karel Vejmelka made 26 saves and John Marino got a fortunate bounce for the game-winning goal in the third period as Utah beat Dallas in Salt Lake City.

Marino and Nick Schmaltz each had a goal and an assist for the Mammoth, who are on a six-game (5-0-1) points streak. Vejmelka picked up his NHL-leading 22nd win of the season.

Mikko Rantanen scored and Jake Oettinger, who stopped 25 shots for the Stars, who have won just twice (2-5-4) in their past 11 games.

Sabres 5, Canadiens 3

Tage Thompson had a hand in all five goals, scoring three times and adding two assists for Buffalo in a win against visiting Montreal.

Josh Doan had a goal and an assist, Alex Tuch also scored and Noah Ostlund had two assists for Buffalo, who have won 14 of their past 16 games. Colten Ellis made 20 saves in his 11th NHL start for Buffalo. The two teams combined to score four power-play goals on seven opportunities.

Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki each had a goal and an assist, Ivan Demidov also scored, Lane Hutson contributed two assists, and Jacob Fowler made 22 saves for Montreal, which has dropped three of four (1-2-1).

Flames 3, Blackhawks 1

Mikael Backlund scored a first-period goal that held up as the game-winner, leading Calgary to a comeback victory over host Chicago.

Backlund and Yegor Sharangovich each collected a goal and an assist and Matt Coronato added an empty-netter for the Flames, who finished a 2-3-0 road trip. Calgary went into the clash with only one win in the past six outings.

Nick Foligno scored for the Blackhawks, who have dropped three of four, including the first two affairs of their four-game homestand.

Blue Jackets 4, Canucks 1

Kirill Marchenko and Kent Johnson each had a goal with an assist while Elvis Merzlikins made 30 saves as Columbus won its third straight while handing visiting Vancouver its ninth straight loss.

Charlie Coyle scored for the fourth time during a three-game goal streak and Zach Werenski extended his consecutive home point run to 16 games with a goal for the Blue Jackets, who are 2-0-0 since 70-year-old Rick Bowness replaced the fired Dean Evason as coach earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Brock Boeser snapped a 21-game goal drought for the Canucks, who capped a winless six-game road trip while amid an 0-7-2 slide -- one loss shy of matching the club-record 10-game losing streak in October-November 1997.
