Sports briefs: Novato grapplers edge Terra Linda in tiebreaker
Zenon Arroyo (167 pounds) and Jiriah Vanassy (128) both scored first-round pinfall wins for Novato High, which edged Terra Linda based on a tiebreaker in Wednesday’s action on the mat.
The Trojans scored six pinfall victories, but forfeited four matches, and found themselves tied 42-42 with the Hornets at the end of competition. Novato won based on tiebreaker criteria.
The Trojans’ Junior Cifuentes (192) had the fastest pin of the day in 25 seconds over Josue Villasenor. Terra Linda’s Kai Probst (152) won in 54 seconds. Terra Linda also got wins from Kaden Pace (140), Arthur Sepan (146), Alden Koerner (159) and Lazlow Chaffee (177).
- Redwood High picked up wins over rival Tam (47-36) and a shorthanded Archie Williams High squad (54-17) on Wednesday. The Giants’ Hayden Schepps (167) scored a pair of quick pins, each in less than 30 seconds, against the Peregrine Falcons’ Henry Hirsch and the Red-tailed Hawks’ Dylan C. Hayes. Redwood’s Ayaan Naseer (122) scored an impressive 21-4 technical fall win over Tam’s Noah Kaijankoski, and pinned Archie Williams’ Judah Emanuel in an efficient win. Tam beat Archie Williams, 60-21, with wins by Sienna Horger (115), Kaijankoski, Tyrell Smith (146) and Hayes. The Hawks’ Dylan Van Doren (152) and heavyweight Dylan G. Hayes scored wins against the Giants. The Falcons were led by Rainer Gabenkort (128), who scored a pair of victories, as well as Educy, Adam Levey (140) and Kiran Toy (172), who each won against Tam.
- San Marin rolled to a 72-6 victory over an undermanned San Rafael squad on Wednesday, with the Mustangs’ Quinn Peterson (167) and Levi Manville (159) each pinning their opponents in less than a minute. Noah Albertson (134), Luke Miller (140) and Derilem Rodas (172) also scored victories for San Marin. San Rafael’s only win came from Mariana Barrios (146) with a first-round pin over Jada Bruce-Badberg.
Girls basketball
Abby Bartholo led San Marin with 19 points in Thursday’s 50-40 victory over the Branson School at Dominican University. Eleanna Schram added 16 points for the Mustangs (12-6, 3-0 MCAL). Boys basketball
Marin Academy fell 48-38 to Urban on Wednesday. The Wildcats (12-6, 0-3 BCL West) face a tough task Friday as they try to snap a three-game skid when they face University.
- San Domenico (15-4, 3-1 BCL West) topped Stuart Hall, 53-45, on Wednesday. The Panthers are scheduled to face Urban on Friday.
- St. Vincent of Petaluma took a strong first-half lead, but had to hold on against a tough Ukiah team late for a 55-54 victory Wednesday night. Novato’s Jack Ellis pumped in 16 points for the victorious Mustangs, while Dylan Chelew, another Novato resident, added 14 points. St. Vincent (9-4, 3-0 NBL) is scheduled to face Piner on Friday.
Basketball
The 24/8 Academy will present a MLK Basketball Skills Day with former Terra Linda High star Kenny Woodard on Monday at St. Vincent’s School in San Rafael. The camp welcomes boys and girls from third grade through middle school.
“We want to make sure at each workout, to ask players what they are thankful for, why are they playing this game,” said Woodard, the CEO and founder of the 24/8 Academy. “We want them to know what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood for. We are coming together to forge relationships through the game of basketball.”
