Over 200 Flights Canceled by 5 Major Airlines Amid Strong Winter Storm
Earlier Thursday morning the National Weather Service warned of heavy snowfall in the Great Lakes region.
"In the wake of today's frontal passage, heavy snowfall on the northwest side of a potent surface low will linger over portions of the Great Lakes and Interior Northeast today. Accordingly, a handful of Winter Storm Warnings and Lake Effect Snow Warnings remain in effect for an additional 6-8" of snowfall," it said.
While the United States is bracing for heavy snow, Canada is getting the brunt of the storm on Thursday.
Over 200 Flights Canceled by Canadian Airlines
According to the latest data from Flight Aware, Canada's five major airlines, Air Canada, Jazz, Porter Airlines, WestJet and Air Canada Express have canceled over 200 flights on Thursday alone with another 391 flights delayed due to a strong winter storm.
Toronto Pearson Airport, which has already received nearly six inches of snow, issued a statement after it saw nearly 200 cancellations alone.
"We've seen another 2 cm of snow this morning, bringing the total snowfall to 14 cm (5.5 inches) at Toronto Pearson since the storm started. Our surface maintenance specialists have been out in our state-of-the-art snowplows doing loops of the airfield to keep critical areas clear of snow. This team is responsible for keeping roughly 5 million square metres of runways, taxiways and aprons clear. Here's a look at our dedicated team out there clearing the snow," it said on social media with a video showing the immense snow.

Air Canada, which has canceled 52 flights and delayed another 151, called for travelers to check their flight status ahead of time.
"Airline operations are impacted by a significant winter storm hitting parts of Ontario and Québec. Please check your flight's status before going to the airport via the Air Canada app or at http://aircanada.com," it announced on social media.
111 flights originating from Toronto and Montreal have been canceled while another 113 flights arriving as the two airports were called off as a result of the storm that has dumped between 8-to-14 inches of snow in the region.
