A U.S. immigration officer shot and wounded a Venezuelan man fleeing a traffic stop in Minneapolis on Wednesday, escalating tensions over the Trump administration’s expanded immigration enforcement in the city.

The Department of Homeland Security said the officer fired after being attacked with a snow shovel and broomstick while struggling with the suspect, whom authorities say was in the country illegally.

The shooting triggered overnight clashes as protesters hurled rocks, ice and fireworks at federal agents, who responded with tear gas, according to Reuters journalists at the scene.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara urged crowds to disperse, warning that continued unrest risked further escalation, as city leaders called for calm amid rising anger.

Minneapolis has been on edge since an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, during an encounter earlier this month, drawing widespread protests and scrutiny.

Despite criticism from local and state leaders, the Trump administration has said it will deploy hundreds more federal agents to the city, reinforcing an existing force of about 2,000.

DHS has accused Minnesota’s Democratic leadership of encouraging resistance to immigration officers, a claim rejected by Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz.

The latest shooting underscores growing friction between federal immigration authorities and communities in Minneapolis, as enforcement intensifies and protests show no sign of easing.
